"Its not what you think...?"

Fast move
CJ: 1 success

Connor: 1 success

Matt: 2 successes

Using the ATZ: FFO Fast movement rules (which I like better than ATZ:BDTZ) both CJ and Connor move the 8” normal move +4” which equals 12” north. Matt with 2 successes could technically move 16” but doesn’t want to leave the group so will only move 12”.

Running straight north leads them right into PEF 2, which resolves as… Oh yay, a police car! Police are in a vehicle, and pass in sight test.

Meanwhile, what about that pesky car alarm?

The car alarm now generates zombies. As this is Day 1 of the outbreak, this urban area is treated as a suburban area (5 or 6 on d6) to generate new zombies. I roll and resolve 3 zombies that appear, one north, at 12:00, one southeast at 5:00, and the last at 6:00 south. They are placed 12” away from the noise that generated them (the car alarm) which means our heroes run right into the 12” zombie!

All zombies congregate on the car alarm as currently Stars are out of sight of any zombies. The two (5 and 6pm) zombies walk around the convention center and move west. The zombie walking north into section 4 turns around instead and heads south towards the car alarm. The two zombies in the street and the one on the west side of the center turn and congregate around the van; probably beating the hell out of it to get inside.

With Connor’s suggestion, the trio runs down the side of the street, northwards and hopefully to freedom. As they get nearer to the intersection suddenly a car’s headlights come on, and so do police lights and siren. A gruff voice over a PA system says “Hold it right there! Do not move!”

Now, we need to do a “Meet & Greet” for the police. Over to you folks!

Youtube Fun

A quick post, as I'm still waiting on the pics for the Defend scenario. To keep my readers amused, check out the below 2 links on Youtube.

This is an actual broadcast on a TV station in the Great Lakes region. Hackers got into the Emergency Broadcast System of the station and ran the following announcement:

This is some ATZ miniature gaming that was pretty cool:

A warning for those buying plastic minis

ThinkGeek is running a sale on some plastic army men and zombies...As I am big into 20mm figs (ie plastic army men) I thought this would be a great set to use to increase my variety of zombies. A few extra survivors wouldn't hurt either. So, I put them on my Amazon wishlist for Christmas.

My In-Laws (of all people!) got them for me. Great, right! Wrong! The figures are nice, well sculpted....and about 45mm tall(!) Who thought THAT was a good scale? not only are they waaay too big for my 20mm stuff, they're not even terribly useful for the standard 28mm gamers! I sent them to Dexter (from the Board of the Living Lead) to see if he could do something with them, as I can't.

The big gripe I have is that ThinkGeek didn't put their scale on the page, just that they were zombies and troopers of "traditional plastic army men". Now, is it just me or does "traditional plastic army men" bring 1/72 scale figs to mind? Or even 1/35 at the outside, not 45mm.

First Post of the Year! The Smith Letter

Hello all,

As anyone who's read this blog can attest, I like All Things Zombie mostly for its solo campaign element. I play solo wargames in a variety of eras, and I read the Lone Warrior blog for the Solo Wargames Association at the link below.

In their August 2011 section, Chris Hahn discusses a letter he read in the March 2011 Miniatures Wargaming magazine that discussed the overemphasis (in Mr. Smith's opinion) on detailed painting of figures and exquisite terrain over the basic idea of wargaming; that is getting together and playing games. He further considers that it promotes a brand of financial and painting skilled "elite" that intimidates and deters many people from entering the hobby.
I'm still chewing on it, but I think he may have a point. Not that I think those who paint all their figs or create detailed terrain are elitists, they are simply exhibiting their love of the hobby and its modeling-painting aspect. Does this keep people from the hobby? I've been at conventions where I've overheard miniature wargamers sneering at a person's bad paint jobs on their figures, or turning their noses up at paper terrain. But is this just the normal level of appreciating greater effort? Or a sign of something worse, as Mr. Smith seems to imply?

Read the Lone Warrior article and please give me your opinions:

You know what's annoying?

For once, I'd like to find a miniatures company that sells 1/72 (20mm) female figures in metal or plastic that are NOT...

1. wearing miniskirts and high heels
2. wearing lingerie or evening dresses while fighting
  3. Are about to burst out of their tops
4. as above, but also have huge....hair.
6. carrying double UZIs, MAC-10s, etc.
7. wearing garter belts

Now don't get me wrong, I am quite a fan of the female form. However, IMO women in the Zombie Apocalypse(TM) should be much like the men. On the whole dressed as Joe or Jane average. Maybe carrying a revolver or shotgun, but that's it.

In fact, what I'd REALLY like would be the above normal figs carrying axes/axe handles, pool cues, baseball bats and other types of improvised weapons. Something you'd grab if you saw a shambling corpse moving your way while you're at work or lunching at McFoods.

I can't find any!

If any of my four followers know where to get some Jane/Joes like that, please let me know! :D

"Those Who Remain"?

This blog will be a running record of my solo All Things Zombie campaign, along with updates on any new minis or terrain I manage to get. For those who don't know, ATZ is a Zombie Apocalypse game from Two Hour Wargames, where you play a person trying to survive the Rise of the Living Dead(TM) and generally get you and your loved ones to safety. Or not, as the case may be! Thus the name "Those Who Remain"; those who survive the fall of civilization under rotting hands and cadaverous teeth of the undead.

The Reaction System (the game system used by THW in all its games) provides that uncertainty in combat that most miniatures wargames lack. Your troops aren't mindless automatons you can move around to their certain doom. They can react to events on the board beyond your control, just as real soldiers do. They might follow your orders, or they may not if you're asking them to do patently ridiculous stuff. Furthermore, the system runs as a normal wargame (head-to-head), all players on the same side, and as a solo game; the latter is my personal fave. Its very tables intensive, but it has the best solo system I've seen in any roleplaying game or wargame.

I add RPGs to the list because ATZ has supplements and rules that really make it a rules light RPG. In fact, you're encouraged to run the first campaign as yourself on Day 1 of the zombie uprising, with your workplace, home and neighborhood as the terrain for your first encounters.

So, the next post will be "Day 1" for Zombie Chow at his workplace!
